First of all, do not consider taking lessons on any instrument unless you intend on learning the fundamentals of music. You should then apply these fundamentals to your instrument. When this is done, technique and theory combine to produce true music. In our case, music theory will be applied to the electric bass. Lessons will contain an in depth look at music theory, harmony, rhythm, reading, writing and composition. Various techniques for the electric bass will be explored including traditional pizzicato, staccato, slap, tap, chording and more modern techniques.
For the most part, a pick will never be used in lessons. Playing with your fingers is an essential part of most techniques on the electric bass, therefore, it will be stressed. An emphasis will be placed on having an open mind to all styles of music including, but not limited to, jazz, rock, R&B, blues, country, classical and hip hop. Tablature will not be a part of the lessons due to the fact that it fails to contain rhythm and will only constipate your musical education.
Lessons are available in two time increments. Students may take either an hour every week or an hour every other week. For the most part, I feel an hour every other week works best for most students. Lesson prices are $40 an hour. I am currently accepting students at my shop in Lafayette and I also teach by appointment only in Merrillville, IN on Saturday afternoons. You can contact me via email or call 765/404-4192 to set up an appointment.
